“I saw firsthand that kids who otherwise had challenges with things like focus and concentration thrived with both when challenged with the prospect of catching a fish. I also saw kids getting over their fears right in front of me as they worked to understand the natural world.” – Shore Volunteer, Lake Washington

2016 Event Report:

This year’s event was challenged by fishing restrictions, saved by a new event format, and packed full of shore activities – yet the fishing was all that mattered in the end – as 44 kids and their families caught fish on shore and on the water from boats. 32 experienced fishermen and women, including a large group from the Western Bass Club, shared their expertise with kids as they caught trout out of the stocked net on shore and the variety of fish caught out on the lake (mostly perch and bass). The kids fishing on shore got the full experience as they were also able to go on boat rides. New to this year’s event were many shore activities, which were manned by volunteers from CBP, a City of Renton Day of Service group, Renton Fire Water Safety Team, and many individuals. These included: a coloring table, a casting game, a face painter, and the Renton Fire Ambulance to tour and Renton Fire Water Team had divers in the water to interact with. Also, two Sea Gals were there to talk to and take pictures with the kids. The day ended with a great lunch and awards ceremony, where each child received a plaque with a photo of themselves and their fishing captain/buddy. With all that happened this year, the most important part for the kids was fishing – and that is what it is all about!

Comments from our past events:

“I just wanted to send a message and thank the organizers, volunteers, boat owners, grill masters and everyone who put on this amazing event. My son, Wolfie LOVED it!!! I can’t tell you what a huge impact this has made on his life. The boat he got to ride on was a speed boat and they got to take a spin around the lake in addition to fishing. He thought that was incredible. Please pass on my many thanks for making such a wonderful day for my son. I dare say he got to experience for 2 hours “being normal”. Best Wishes from a grateful mom!” – Parent, 2015 Lake Washington event

“You guys are awesome I am so happy to report that my son went fishing with your organization on Lake Washington this past weekend and let me tell you he had such a great time that he can’t stop talking about it. He caught 37 fish that day he was also interviewed by a news station and was able to pose for a picture with the Seahawks cheerleaders. You guys made his year!!!!!! Thank you to all those volunteers and sponsors and of course your organization. For opening up your hearts to everyone. Thank You.” –Parent, Lake Washington event, 2014
