On June 3, 2016 at Dreher Island State Park, on beautiful Lake Murray, the C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation held its first ever event in the state of South Carolina. The event was made possible by two partners: The Lake Murray Seniors Bass Club and Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church in nearby Lexington, South Carolina. Sammy Crouch, who is a member of both the Seniors Bass Club and Mt. Horeb UMC, had been talking to the staff at the C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation about putting on an event on Lake Murray and came up with the idea of partnering both groups. With Sammy’s help and coordination, both groups worked together to put on a great first time event for some very special children.
The Lake Murray Seniors Bass Club has been around for over 20 years and has over 75 members. Members must be over 55 years of age and they meet monthly for a catered lunch meeting and have a monthly tournament. The club has most all of their tournaments on weekdays to avoid lake traffic. Their monthly tournaments are well attended and competitive. Sammy knew that Mt. Horeb UMC had its own special needs ministry with children that would love to go fishing. He asked the club to vote on providing boaters for the event and the club voted unanimously to help put on the event. Club member Jim Edwards and his wife Barbara volunteered to provide a BBQ lunch for all the children and their families as well as all volunteers. After talking to Sally Garner at Mt. Horeb UMC, a date for the event was set; they all decided that a Friday morning would work best for everyone.
The event day was a special one. Some special kids were able to experience some great boating and fishing with some very experienced fishermen and boaters. Each child received their own rod and reel, tackle box, shirt and hat and were ready to hit the water! Several of the boaters had even scouted the lake to find some brim beds that made it easier for the kids to get in on the fun of catching fish. Most of the club’s boaters mentioned that the children really enjoyed going “fast” in the boats, some just wanted to ride instead of fish. A good time was had by all and once in off the water everyone enjoyed a great BBQ lunch provided by Jim and Barbara, followed by the awards ceremony. Everyone helping put on the event enjoyed seeing the children’s faces light up with excitement as they received their award and told their stories about the day’s catches. The members of the Lake Murray Seniors Bass Club put on an excellent event for these great kids, many caught their first ever fish and experienced their first ever boat ride.
