2016 Event Recap: by Erika Lopez
When this coordinator arrived at Black Canyon Park, it was so very dark that I needed a headlamp to walk around and not scare myself! Within 30 minutes upon arrival, the warm sun started to peek over the hills and its beautiful reflection bounced off the reservoir. The morning began with excitement. All the supplies were taken out and placed in their location. My first boat captain arrived promptly at 6 a.m. because he wanted to be the first boat out with his participant. Volunteers began to arrive and were ready to work! Early morning smiles brightened the day more than the warm summer sun. Everything was in order and families began to arrive. Thirty-four participants enjoyed this special day made especially for them; and boy was it special! Fourteen boat captains came out to share their boat and love for the water with the participants, 45 volunteers made sure everything was perfect, and LOTS of fish were caught! C.A.S.T. for Kids has been at Black Canyon Park for over 20 years, and each year it just gets better and better. I look forward to next year.
2013 Event Recap:
The beautiful August day began early for many anglers, volunteers, and families. The early wake was likely hard at the first sound of the alarm clock, but the immediate thought of what was to come ahead made it worth it to get out of bed.
Volunteers and boat captains were quick to set up for the event. Many were very familiar with how things worked and provided guidance to first timers. An excited participant arrived one hour early!
Thirty participants enjoyed their special day by riding in a boat and fishing with an expert angler on Black Canyon Reservoir. For some, this was their first time boating and fishing, but for others, C.A.S.T. for Kids is an event they eagerly look forward to every year, because they remembered the fun they’ve had at the reservoir. Fish were caught, tummies were fed, children danced with the Bureau of Reclamation’s canal safety mascot, Otto Otter; and an awards ceremony concluded the day.
Families and boat captains, as well as volunteers, expressed their joy and promised to be back next year. The annual C.A.S.T. for Kids event at Black Canyon Reservoir was a huge success!
