“They amaze me at times. I had a child that never had a rod and reel in his hand before. He was casting in the first 20 minutes AND enjoyed it more than any person I have ever seen cast.” – Shore Volunteer, Packery Channel, TX

This is a C.A.S.T. for Kids event designed to provide children with disabilities the opportunity to enjoy a quality outdoor recreational experience through the sport of fishing. Not all locations are conducive to hosting boating events. This event gives participants the opportunity to fish from shore.

C.A.S.T. for Kids Poem

We’re there before sunrise, to get everything set.
For a morning of fishing, we hope the kids don’t forget.
We’ve labored to give them, a joy to remember.
The attention is theirs, and they are the center.
They all get excited, as they make their first wish.
To cast out their line, and catch the first fish.
Joy and laughter, can be heard from afar.
They’re so happy to be here, each one is a star.
Our sponsors are many, and the volunteers also.
We’re all here for the children, we know this is their show.
We’ve committed our time, to make this day their treat.
But it comes back to us tenfold,
our day’s now complete.
Martha’s the one, who’s headed this effort.
With many long hours, and not much credit.
“C.A.S.T. for Kids”, we do once each year.
Twelve months of planning, and it ends with a tear.
It won’t be long though, before we start it again.
We love the hugs and the smiles, this is part of the plan.”

2018 Event Recap

We had 42 kids and 69 volunteers show up for the event. The volunteers arrived at 7:30 and the kids at 8:30.

Each child was paired with a volunteer and a picture was taken (the child was given that picture in a plaque later in the day). Then it was time to start fishing! We had a fishing pole, tackle box, t shirt, cap, fishing towel & bait for each kid. The fishing was really good, almost everyone caught fish and the excitement was contagious. About 11ish everyone stopped fishing for lunch which was provided by Whataburger and Stripes. After lunch we had a drawing and gave out prizes. The day ended with lots of hugs and promises to be there next year. And we never got any rain!!

“The cheers from every child who caught a fish, the children’s smiles and everyone coming together in a special way. This event has truly impacted me in a positive way.” – Shore Volunteer, Packery Channel

“As primary caregiver, we focus a lot on growth and development. We don’t get to do a lot just for fun. Thank you for providing this opportunity to help me remember to build the relationship.” – Parent of Participant Packery Channel

“ Every moment was memorable as it is was my first year. It was well organized and weather perfect.” – Fishing Coach,  Packery Channel
