Another great Take a Warrior Fishing (TWF) event took place at West Point Lake on the Chattahoochee River near La Grange, Georgia on June 4, 2016. The event is held at the beautiful Highland Marina Resort which lies right on the banks of this large reservoir, known for its good fishing. 53 Warriors were able to attend the event this year, many coming from nearby Fort Benning. One veteran came all the way from Hickory, North Carolina to attend the event; a six hour drive.
Drew Brandenburg is a retired Army veteran who served 10 years in the military. Drew was wounded in Afghanistan and suffers from traumatic brain injury (TBI), as well as gunshot wounds. This was the second Take a Warrior Fishing event that Drew has been able to attend at West Point Lake. Drew and his family try to attend as many fishing events for veterans as they can. Drew likes to fish but never fishes unless there is an event to attend and added that this event was well worth the drive, just for the opportunity to fish with an experienced fisherman, and would like to return again in the future. His favorite part of the event is “catching the fish”. He also enjoys “the gathering of fellow veterans”.
The Warriors that attended the West Point TWF event each received their own Lew’s rod and reel, Plano tackle bag, t-shirt and some Yamamoto Baits, as well as some good food and fellowship and special time on the water making new friendships and memories. Thanks to all of the wonderful volunteers and sponsors that make these events happen for veterans like Drew Brandenburg. If you are interested in helping to put on an event like this in your area of the country, please contact us here at the C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation. We will be glad to help you in planning your own Take a Warrior Fishing event. From everyone here at C.A.S.T., a special thanks to all of the “Warriors”.
