“My son and I attended the Lake Shasta event last year. The volunteers were amazing and my son, who had never been on the water, had such a fun time! Thank you CAST for Kids for giving my child an experience he will never forget!”
This is a C.A.S.T. for Kids event designed to provide children with disabilities, ages 5 – 17, the opportunity to enjoy a quality outdoor recreational experience through the sport of fishing. Take to the water with C.A.S.T. for an unforgettable morning of fishing and boating!

Reclamation joins the C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation to bring together fishermen who volunteer their time and boat to spend a morning with a very special child. The concept is bold, to say the least, but the result is a group of people that when it is all over have changed in some small way. There are smiles on everyone’s face and joy throughout the group. You can feel it. It is an amazing day.
This year was different…it was a smaller group of kids, but the interaction was so much better at this event. We got to really spend time with the kids. The true indicator of that were the smiles on the kid’s faces. Watching the child with their boat captain, fishing and interacting with other special kids… just being kids – having fun getting outside with their families.
Almost everything for this event is donated by our generous community, including most of the food. The Shasta Lake’s Lions Club and the Redding Elks Club each bring their huge barbeques and do all the cooking. We have outstanding volunteers that give joyfully, without question and can’t wait to do it again next year. Everyone has the best time. It is hard work that is very rewarding.
The boat captains that come out to make this day happen are not immune to the “special thrill” either. We have a fisherman that travels one hundred miles to Shasta Lake, brings his own boat, uses his own gas, lures and gear, and personally went out and bought a fish finder so each year “his child” would have a better chance of catching a fish. The captains want “their kid” to experience the excitement of reeling in that fish and they don’t disappoint. The kids mean that much to them.
At the end of the day everyone walks away very tired, maybe a little sunburned, but filled with a warmth and pride you just can’t buy or put into words. We have definitely all caught the “Special Thrill,” and can’t wait for next year.
