“My daughter learned a lot that day. She had the best time I think she’s had in years. The boat capitan was a GREAT captian. His name is Brady Belk, and I hope we get him next year. ” – Parent, Lake Bastrop, TX

2016 Event Recap:

A week before the Lake Bastrop C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation fishing event, weathermen were forecasting 100% chance of rain and severe thunderstorms.  The days leading up to the event had us worried and although some of our sponsors and volunteers opted out this year due to possible severe weather, BOR decided to hold the event and make a safety assessment the morning of.  Around 5:00 a.m. a severe thunderstorm blew through the area and there was even mention of a small tornado!  There were downed trees and lots of branches strewn all over the park and no power the day of the event, but that didn’t stop us!  By 6:30 a.m. the storm had passed and boat captains started rolling in with their boats.  The sun came out and the winds were calm, it turned out to be a beautiful day after all.  The weather gods were smiling upon us!  The participants started arriving at 7:45 a.m. eager to check-in.  We had breakfast items and coffee for everyone.  The boat captains received a choice of an insulated coffee mug with the words “Boat Captain Extraordinaire” or a C.A.S.T. camo cap upon check in.   They had a safety briefing and worked on setting up the fishing rods for the kids.  Children got paired up with a captain as soon as they checked in then received their tackle box, t-shirt, name tag and cap, got a photo snapped and off they went fishing with their boat captain.  On shore there were volunteers setting up all kinds of games for the kids: fishing game, hacky sack toss, hula hoop, target fishing, giant jenga, etc.  Prizes included small pails, pinwheels, and bubbles to name a few.  We had volunteers grilling burgers and hot dogs.  Schwan’s donated ice cream sandwiches but because we had no power, one of our volunteers kept the ice cream at her house until lunch time.  We also had Little Cesar’s pizzas.  With no power, we couldn’t print the photos for the plaques onsite so after some quick thinking, a BOR employee drove to a local store to print the photos!  While boat captains and kids were out fishing, BOR employees sorted the photos and assembled the plaques.  Good teamwork!  As participants returned from their fishing adventures, some played games while others started eating lunch.  The awards ceremony began and after receiving their plaques and some more picture taking, they were given the opportunity to choose one of the following: insulated picnic basket, backpack, or colorful fabric storage containers.  Boat captains also received an envelope at random with a gift card donated by local restaurants.  Even with all the challenges we faced this year, including weather, sponsors and volunteers opting out, and no power, the event was a total success.  There were many happy smiling kids and parents that expressed their appreciation.

2015 Event Recap:

This year’s C.A.S.T for Kids Foundation event at Lake Bastrop, TX was held on May 2, 2015.  Twenty-eight children and their families showed up to take part in the festivities.  There were several new kids this year as well as new volunteer boat captains.  It is always a delight to see new faces.

Mother Nature provided fantastic weather and the kids caught lots of fish.  The DJ played some tunes that inspired the kids to get up and dance.  Everyone had a great time watching them have so much fun.  In addition, Bastrop Chili’s provided an excellent fajita lunch for volunteers and participants and Schwan’s provided yummy ice cream sandwiches for dessert.

A huge thank you to all of the sponsors who support the Bastrop C.A.S.T. for Kids event.  It certainly wouldn’t happen without them.
